Determined
to turn off its critical rural CDMA mobile phone infrastructure and
force its remaining users onto the new 3G network, Telstra has taken
the war of words and regulation between itself and Communications
Minister HelenCoonan to the courts in a bid to stop her imposing a
licence condition that the new network must match the service levels of
the one they wish to turn off.

In a bold and defiant move, Telstra has commenced court proceedings today against the Minister for Communications alleging it was unfairly treated in the recent Broadband Connect funding decision which saw A$1 billion promised to its competitor for regional broadband.

The Australian mobile phone industry and Government regulators have both been
slammed by an action group called the Total Environment Centre. A damning report
issued by the 35 year old environmental group says the industry recycling
efforts that see just 3 per cent of mobile phones actively recycled is
"pathetic".
