Australians have an expanded choice of HSDPA-capable handsets with the addition of the Motorola MOTO Q 9h Smartphone on the Vodafone network. Announced back in May, the new Moto Q runs the latest Windows Mobile 6 operating system and offers a QWERTY keyboard and email in an 11.8mm package.

The MOTO Q 9h is now available on Vodafone priced at RRP $799 but free on the $79 MyBusiness Cap if you sign for two years. The handset is compatible with Vodafone's HSDPA network, so your downloads all happen at high speed, whether that's for emials r downloading digital content like video or music.

The phone is primarily targeted at a business user market. Although it has a few things for the prosumer. There is a good camera - 2 megapixel with 8x zoom and a built-in light. The MOTO Q 9h also has a music player and stereo speakers, so if you are looking for a QWERTY phone this is fully spec'd out regardless of how you want to use it.

The device weighs in at a hefty 134 grams though which is at the top end of the scale for a phone and although it is thin at under 12 mm its wide and long (118 x 67mm) making it bigger than the Blackberry Pearl for example. The Pearl is 107x50x14.5mm and weighs in at 89 grams.

The MOTO Q 9h at 118x67x11.8 and 134 grams is best compared to the Blackberry Curve at 107x60x15.5mm making the RIM offering thicker but lighter and only 111.4 grams.

However, neither of the Blackberry devices are 3G capable let alone HSDPA placing the MOTO Q 9h two steps ahead in functionality and making the marginal size and weight increase actually quite impressive.

"Motorola has created a phone that allows consumers to take control 24/7. MOTO Q9h is a multi-purpose communication device that is easy to use and doesn't compromise on work, life and play," said Andrew Volard, Managing Director, Motorola South Pacific "This Smartphone offers state-of-the-art voice quality technology, messaging, speed, processing power, keyboard and display packaged within a sleek design for the modern consumer."

The device will handle multiple email acounts so if you want to dual use it for work and home that should work okay. as the phone will connect to your corporate email account and a personal one.

For that you are going to need to 'bolt on' a data plan. There are a couple of usage plans to choose from. One is good for about 500 emails (1090 MB) and will set you back $29.95 a month. The 'Heavy' plan costs $49.95 a month and has an allowance of 300MB equal to about 1500 emails. Of course those are only estimates. If you go over your Data Bundle, you'll be charged 30c/MB.
