Those of us outside of the iPhone zone are yet to meet the challenge
of working out how to justify a new Apple iPhone on our business
expenses, but by the time we can buy one of the slick new smartphones
the challenge may be far easier. Although the device is not rumoured to
appear in Europe for another couple of months, a UK-based company has
already released a gateway to link you iPhone to the corporate
Microsoft Exchange server.
Mobile email on your iPhone might not be enough to get your boss to
fork out the recommended retail price for your new iPhone, but if you
can somehow get your hands on this latest must-have, at least you know
you can take it to your IT manager and demand it is connected.
Synchronica specialises in mobile synchronisation and
device management with its Mobile Gateway product, which now supports
over-the-air synchronization between Microsoft Exchange and
the newly launched Apple iPhone.
Mobile Gateway seamlessly integrates
with the corporate IT infrastructure and does not require the
enterprise to expose IMAP and SMTP in their Exchange servers or install
additional connectors - issues that often raise security concerns with
IT administrators.
In short this means you don't even have to talk your IT department to open the firewall or install
additional software.
Instead, Mobile Gateway uses Microsoft's
secure Outlook Web Access (OWA) to retrieve email from the corporate
Exchange server. This is a service that your company probably already
offers for other mobile users needing to access their email on the run.
The company says the solution even integrates right there into
the built-in email client of the Apple iPhone making it completely
seamless for the end-user.
Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO of Synchronica said, "The iPhone is a
very attractive smartphone, appealing to both the consumer and prosumer
market. However, IT Managers are not going to permit their executives
to synchronize a device that requires them to punch holes in the
corporate firewall.
"Mobile Gateway already supports synchronization
with Microsoft Exchange, but does not require firewall modification or
any software to be installed in the corporate network, so this won't be
an issue. From a carrier's perspective, we are significantly expanding
the reach of the iPhone into the business user and prosumer segments."
