Docking stations ease
the frustration for mobile users while they aren't mobile. But the desktop devices are often luxuries most likely found in the workplace. Now Belkin has taken advantage of the introduction of ExpressCard slots in todays' notebook computers to deliver a solution for the home that's not only reasonable priced it supports the multimedia applications most used in the home.
With the huge growth in enthusiasm for notebooks in the home
has come smaller screens and no keyboard/mouse deskset or the
frustration of plugging devices in and out of the computer everytime
you want to set it on your desk.
While, Belkin's
$349.95 solution is a little pricey, it's well worth the investment if
you want to get the most out of your laptop. You can setup your home
workstation, in minutes by simply connecting the to your laptop through
itsExpressCard port and then plug your
devices and peripherals into the docking station.
After that, when you want to take
your notebook to another room or on the go, just disconnect the
ExpressCard and you're on your way.
But when you are at your desk,
you get all the advantages that today's multimedia laptops deliver,
such as large high-resolution display with 32bit video at 1600 x 1200
and flawless 5.1 surround sound - assuming you have these peripherals
on your desktop that is.
It's
all made possible by the Express Card connection. ExpressCards are the
replacement technology for PC Cards (or PCMCIA) which have been slowly
introduced into notebook computers over the last couple of years, but
which nobody has really had a use for.
Although they are smaller
than PC Cards, the real advantage of the new specification here is that
Belkin's docking station performs 5 times faster than a USB solution
would. That's how it manages to support the high-0end peripherals.
The
box doesn't look so bad either. The vertical design saves room on your
desk while easily connecting your monitor, keyboard, printers,
speakers, USB drives and other peripherals to your laptop.
