As if NASA astronauts didn't have enough on their plates, first they
were in danger of being kidnapped by their colleagues, then it turns
out they might be asked to fly into space with a drunk! Not to mention
the danger of somebody sabotaging their eqiuipment. Now they can't even
have their iPhones to work.
According to the minutes
of a July 10 meeting of NASA tech officials obtained by
InformationWeek, NASA astronauts and other employees aren't allowed to
use their Apple iPhones on the job. The US space agency looked at the
iPhones and judged them "not to be enterprise ready". At least not yet.
Never fear the space junkies are allowed to use a nice new BlackBerry
8800, or maybe a Palm Treo 750. These devices are seen as good to go.
According to the InformationWeek report the decision was made by
officials within NASA's Outsourcing Desktop Initiative For NASA (which
goes by the cool acronym ODIN). It is a program under which NASA is
outsourcing computer supply and support to private-sector companies.
Despite the minutes indicating it was Jeff Stephens, an ODIN acting
project manager and defense contractor at Lockheed Martin being
responsible for the decision, he refused to confiurm or deny it when
contacted by InformationWeek saydin only: "I can't comment on that one
way or the other."
He also didn't respond to a follow up e-mail. Perhaps he is afraid of being kidnapped.
