Nokia has beefed up the device management suport in its Intellisync software enabling wider device support, tighter integration, remote control, improved theft-loss protection and hardware control.

The changes are designed to make mobile devices a more palatable option to security and management aware IT managers.

"We are seeing a strong interest from European and global operators and business customers for device management functions that mirror those of the IT environment," said Scott Cooper, senior vice president, Enterprise Solutions, Nokia.

"By adding the new capabilities into our current suite of products, we are responding to the market demand and accelerating the adoption of business mobility beyond mobile email."

One of the new features in the Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite is the ability to control the device remotely 'over-the-air' for troubleshooting, but also for security. Administrators can access a device remotely using the phone network and can actually see (a representation) of the device screen. This will also be a big help for Helpdesk agents, but the big advantages will come in provisioning and upgrading the devices.

Unfortunately, these new features are restricted to the Windows Mobile devices. Support for the Symbian devices will not come until a future release.

IT managers can also take direct control over the device to individually control specific hardware elements such as disabling the use of the camera or the wireless networking WiFi capabilities of the device. Administrators can disable/enable the camera, Bluetooth, WLAN, infrared and memory card.

A user receives a pop-up screen notification that hardware functionality is disabled. The setting cannot be overridden by the end-user. This new functionality gives the option to disable functions like the camera on a mobile device in case company policy does not allow cameras on their premises.

Finally in the anti-theft area, Nokia has implemented power-on-password for S60 3rd Edition Nokia Eseries and Nokia Nseries devices. This uses the device's built-in "lock" application. Similarly, hard reset is supported for S60 3rd Edition Nokia Nseries devices. The functionality uses the built-in device "factory reset" application.
