New research from Motorola reveals what you already know - Australians judge a person by their phone. In fact when it comes to their choice of colour we are quite quick to make assumptions about their personalities.

It turns out that more than three quarters of Australians believe the colour of their mobile phone is a reflection of their own personality, while almost half (47 percent) said they prejudged fellow handset users based on the colour of their phone.

We apparently tend to associate specific colours with different personality traits. For example 54 percent of women and 40 percent of men told the researhcers that the colour stone grey indicates you are sleek, cool and modern. Hey and guess what! When we are shopping for a phone, the same rules seem to apply.

So overall, Australians selected stone grey as their colour of choice for their own phone. 46 percent of people surveyed choose that colour out of five possible colours for their next mobile phone purchase.  Next up was black, which garnered 23 percent of the vote followed by lavender at 17 percent.

39 percent of women surveyed said owning a lavender phone shows an appreciation for pretty things, while 59 percent of men said the colour lavender reflects a more feminine personality. A slightly different result in Queensland demosntrated there is even regional differences at work. It seems that brighter colours are more in vogue in the Sunshine State where 21 percent choose pink as their first colour preference, compared with only 5 percent of NSW respondents.

In addition, the survey found that on average, women are more influenced by colour and design when purchasing a mobile phone (30 percent), than men (18 percent).

However, it's Aussie men, not women, who use the colour of their phone to make a personal statement about themselves. Of those surveyed, 40 percent of men claimed the best benefit of owning a coloured handset was that it enabled them to stand out from the crowd compared to 26 percent of women.

More than 50 percent of Australians polled also stated that they preferred to be recognised as ‘one of a kind' and are more likely to chose a specific colour if it's a limited edition handset.

And yes, you guessed it! Motorola has a new handset and its colour is none other than Stone Grey. The 3G capabile MOTORAZR V3xx is also available in Lavender. Both are on Telstra's Next G.

The new 14.9mm RAZR is HSDPA fast and has an an integrated media player for mobile music and video. The display is a 2.2 inch colour LCD screen on the inside which can display streaming video and video calls at 15 frames per second performance. The phone's camera is a 1.3 megapixel digital with video capabilities.
