That other browser company, Opera,
has released a Beta edition of a new mini-browser for the Blackberry
devices. The new Opera Mini 4 includes a number of optimizations
specifically for the hugely popular email/phone devices.
The
latest edition of it's Opera Mini 4 browser has a new user interface
and menus for a more comfortable Opera Mini look and feel and some new
features for all that the developer says have been on the wish list for
users.
The browser now has a "Landscape mode" to gives users a
wider screen view of the World Wide Web and a new multi-search Start
Page that it says makes searching easier on the go.
You can also
add your own search engine to the Start Page, a common desktop feature
that was actually pioneered by Opera. Opera Mini also has a virtual
mouse, so you can easily scroll in
any direction. Move the mouse cursor towards what you want, and then it
quickly snaps your view to the link or content.
Apart from being significantly faster than your regular mobile browser, Opera Mini has a couple of features to make
the whole deal a more pleasant experience such as a page overview that
gives you the big picture and then lets you zoom in on the place you
want. Also Opera's unique "Small Screen Rendering" feature called "Fit
to width" makes it easier to see web pages on the small screens without
horizontal scrolling.
You
can also use your keyboard to scroll rather than the navigation
joystick for faster scrolling. You can hit 2 for example to move left
or 6 to scroll down.
"We want to make Opera Mini available to
even more users, so we've improved our support for BlackBerry," said
Jon von Tetzchner, CEO of Opera. "Now the world's most popular mobile
Web browser and most popular handhelds
can work together. At the same time we recognize the incredible role
our community has played in making Opera Mini as popular as it is.
We're proud to offer some of the most requested features in this new
beta as a present to you."
"I've been using Opera Mini for about six months now," said Mik Furie,
an Opera Mini user in the United Kingdom. "It started out as a tool to
enable quicker Web searches than WAP allowed and has now become part of
my everyday life. I use it to keep in touch with friends, write a blog,
and keep up to date on the things I'm interested in such as new phones
and games."
You can watch a demo video here, or the beta is available for free download at http://www.operamini.com/beta/.
