Rugged and semi-rugged notebooks are often based on less
than the latest in CPU technology, the current crop of Panasonic
ToughBooks, for example use Intel Core Duo CPUs, but the GoBook VR-2
goes all out with anIntel 2.0 GHz T7300 Core 2
Duo processor.
Made available in Australia by Avantec, the General Dynamics GoBook
VR-2 semi-rugged notebook also features a new generation touch screen
technology designed for use in Iraq that eases the eye strain when
viewing the display in direct sunlight.
Designed to meet the demands
of business, government agencies, and the military, the GoBook VR-2's
13.3-inch touch screen display has DynaVue, a patent pending display
technology that is deployed by the US military in the harsh desert
conditions of Iraq. But the company says the devices are perfectly
suited for people that work outside, or
need a vehicle mounted computer solution.
Dave Cawsey, General Manager for Avantec commented, "Most laptops
are pretty much useless when you try to work outside in sunlight, as
you can't view the screen. The GoBook VR-2 has a colour touch screen
that works perfectly in direct sunlight, and is designed to cope with
dust and liquids. Australian businesses can now benefit directly from
this very practical technology, which has been proven in the deserts of
Iraq."
The GoBook
VR-2 can also survive a fall from 75cm and comes standard with a spill
resistant keyboard. It also incorporates multiple levels of both physical and
software security, including a TPM 1.2 secure micro-controller with
cryptographic functionality. A stealth mode allows safe operation in
critical military and law enforcement situations, while an optional biometric
fingerprint reader simplifies access to secure information.
As mentioned, the GoBook VR-2 is equipped with the latest Intel 2.0 GHz T7300 Core 2
Duo processor linked to an 800MHz FSB, 4MB L2 cache, up to 4GB memory and the
Intel GM965 Express Chip set.
Connectivity options include 802.11 a/g/n, built0in Wi-Fi, both 3G
mobile phone and EVDO data, Bluetooth and global positioning system
(GPS). The
antennas are fully integrated into the rugged case, ensuring
reliability.
The GoBook VR-2 has an optional office docking station for back at
the office and an optional theft resistant vehicle docking solution to
keep it in your car (or Humvee).
The unit weighs 2.8kg.
Now for the bad news, the GoBook VR-2 is available immediately for a suggested retail price of A$5499 inc GST.
