No doubt responding to the
announcement this week that Korean electronics giant, Samsung and
fashion label Armani have agreed to develop a range of high tech,
high-fashion consumer gear together, Vodafone has announced that the LG
Prada phone will be made available for the first time in Australia next week.
The
LG Prada phone was initially announced in the Northern Hemisphere
earlier this year, but has taken a little while to make its way
down-under. Of course, while Armani is the latest, Dolce
& Gabbana was probably the first fashion label to take an interest
in mobile phones with the Gold Motorola RAZR it co-branded in the
middle of last year - that's so 'last season'.
Short
of buying overseas, potential buyers will no doubt have to wait a
little while to get their hands on a Giorgio Armani/Samsung phone in
Australian, but since this device is expected to be sold though Armani
stores it might not be as long as other fashion labels have taken.
Like
the Apple iPhone, both the Prada and Armani phones are touch screen
devices. The Armani device will feature a very large 2.6-inch TFT
LCD screen, but there's not much else to it so the device will remain
relatively petite. It's the size of a credit card and is more than a
centimetre thick (10.5mm) that's notSamsung's thinnest phone (the U100
is only 5.9mm), but the touchscreen and the petite palm-size footprint
dictate the electronics have to go someplace. The Armani phone will
be87.5 x 54.5 x 10.5mm and 85grams.
Along
with the outer appearance of
the phone, the graphical user interface (GUI) and audio user interface
(AUI) also reflect Giorgio Armani's modern simplicity. The User
Interface is haptic which means you feel a tiny vibration when you
touch
icons on the display to give you some feedback.
A 3-megapixel camera, music player, full Internet browser, Bluetooth
stereo and an external microSD memory slot should convince you this
phone is not all show. You can see some photos below.
Officially, the phone will be available at Giorgio Armani's flagship stores
and selected mobile phone shops in major European countries from
November 2007.
If you can't wait that long, Vodafone Australia will have the Prada
phone in stores next week and is the first network operator in
Australia
to offer the LG-made phone.
The Prade display is relatively large compared to the Armani, the Prada
Phone has a full 3-inch display and has bulked out to 12mm. From the
photos however, you will see that the masters of design have come up
with nearly identical looks - all screen no keypad. The phone is 98.8 x
54 x 12mm and weighs 85grams.
The Prada will be the first advanced touch-screen interface to be
released in Australia since we are still waiting for the iPhone. The
camera is only 2 megapixels, compared to the Armani, but you can expect
all the other features to be there. There's an Office document viewer,
organiser, video player and music
player.
