Taiwanese Windows Mobile smartphone specialist, HTC, has introduced
a new member to its Touch family of devices -- the HTC Touch Dual. The
3G/HSDPA device was announced for Europe alongside the launch of three
new phones/PDAs from the company.
The new Touch Dual differs from the first Touch devices with a sliding
keypad design that adds a 12 or 20 key layout to the touch screen
device. We reported on the HTC Touch announcement, which was only just back
in June this year, so HTC is rolling out new Windows Mobile 6 devices
at a rapid clip. The Touch Dual is expected to start shipping into
Europe later
this month.
Whether you get a 12 or 20-key
keypad will depend on your country and operator choice. No pricing was announced.
Whether the new keypad is an admission that the company's own Touch
Screen gesture recognition technology, TouchFlo, is not up to scratch
could be argued, but it's more likely the announcement that a new full
screen keypad offered as a free software update for the original Touch
could be a hint.
Far from shying away from TouchFlo, HTC has added new functionality to
the gesture-recognition system with the ability to view photo
slideshows using on-screen controls and to zoom and rotate images with
only one hand. TouchFLO also allows enhanced finger touch scrolling
and browsing of web pages, documents, messages and contact lists, says
the company.
"The HTC Touch Dual expands the HTC Touch product family and integrates
3.5G connectivity and a sliding keyboard into a slim and stylish
design. This combination provides customers with the most
uncompromising and intuitive touch experience available on a phone,"
said Peter Chou, chief executive officer of HTC.
"The HTC Touch has not
only changed the way people interact with their phone but it has
redefined what touch means on a consumer device. HTC is committed to
bringing advanced levels of technology to consumers with continuous
innovation. The HTC Touch Dual is the next step forward," he said.
In addition to the new virtual keyboard download,
other Touch news announced by HTC is the introduction of a new colour
variant, Arctic Silver. The virtual keypad will
be available via download from the HTC website at www.htceurope.com.
