Vodafone has had a good result with its mobile coverage of the World Cup Rugby on Vodafone live! with 3G. More than 100,000 unique streams were accessed during comp.
However, the result pales in contrast to 3 mobile's coverage of last year's Ashes Test Series which saw 270,000 streams accessed during the first test alone. Perhaps if the Australian Wallabies had gone further in the World Cup competition, Vodafone's results could have matched, but the popularity of Rugby among the Australian sporting public so far relegates it to a distant third or fourth behind the major football leagues and cricket.
The channel,
exclusive to Vodafone, consistently ranked as one of the most watched
channels
on Vodafone live!. Produced by the Premier Media Group (PMG) which also
produces the FOX SPORTS TV
channels and a range of video, text
and statistical content for television, mobile phone and online
delivery, the Rugby Mobile TV Channel showed all 48 games live or near
live, extensive highlights, replays and
archive footage.
"Australian's have an insatiable appetite for sport, and our latest
foray into this arena by bringing the World Cup to our customers, via mobile,
has been a resounding success," said Richard Sherwood,
General Manager of Mass Markets, Vodafone Australia,
adding: "we're passionate about Rugby,
so we're really proud we were able to help fans make the most of the
World Cup, even if it was half a world away."
Vodafone reports that the most notable
spike in activity occurred on the Monday morning, following the
Australia vs Wales game, but usage was strong during live games and
peak
commuter times as well.
