Perpherals specialist Targus Australia has announced a USB dongle that will extend the range of Bluetooth devices up to 100 metres, ten times the standard range.
The Bluetooth adapter works with either PC and mobile phone technologies, so a user could easily set up a 128-bit encrypted link to receive and respond to text messages sent to a Bluetooth mobile phone.
While the data rate is only listed at 1Mbps - considerably slower that you will get at a 10 metre range, the 100 metres could well be worth the trade off for some users.
According to Targus product manager, David Radel, Bluetooth wireless technology provides real freedom from wired connections and is being fast accepted in Australia. "Bluetooth is specification for a small-form factor, low-cost radio solution," he commented. "Class 1 now provides 100 metre cable-free linking between computers, mobile phones and other portable handheld devices, and connectivity to the Internet."
With a form factor (5.6 x 2 x1.1cm) like a USB drive the USB Bluetooth Adaptor connects up to seven 1.2/1.1 compliant peripherals and has an RRP of $99.95.
