Now in its fifth iteration, Trend Micro Mobile Security has added data encryption and authentication, along with firewall, intrusion detection and malware protection to the  enterprise-class mobile security  solution ready to be managed along with other security solutions in the firm.

Not available until December, the next release mitigates mobile security challenges such as security breaches and data leakage while allowing enterprise administrators to manage security for handheld devices from a single console, says the company.

The software addresses the frustration felt by larger companies who have been forced to respond to user demands for better access to mobile data on  devices which have become as powerful as they have small. The resulting mobile workforce that rely on their handheld devices have been seen by corporate IT professional as a security and management risk with potentially sensitive information put at risk of breach or loss from the inherently difficult to control hadnsets.

Mobile applications such as push email, CRM databases, and field service automation solutions may serve to boost convenience and productivity, but they make data vulnerable and enterprises need a way to ensure both the data and the mobile devices themselves are secure and protected.

At first this was a difficult challenge, but as security companies have turned their attentions to mobile devices (Trend Micro led the way in this) the solutions are evolving getting ready to ease the concerns of corporate security professionals.

This latest offering from Trend Micro, for example, ensures that if a mobile device is lost or stolen, the business-critical data contained in it is encrypted unless it is unlocked with a password. Data on devices that do not comply with policies can be wiped out by administrators and anti-malware features protect the devices and data from viruses, worms, Trojans and SMS text message spam.

The program even offers a firewall and IDS (Intrusion Detection System) to protect against active attack including DoS (Denial-of-Service).

"Businesses are dispatching workers outside the corporate structure, and are moving them through a variety of wireless networks.  Workers are going through airports, hotels, restaurants, and homes to do their jobs," said Thomas Miller, global vice president and general manager of the Enterprise Business Unit.  "Mobile devices that contain confidential data are not only at risk for viruses, worms, Trojans and spam, they're also at risk for theft or accidental loss.  Trend Micro Mobile Security 5.0 provides total mobile protection through a single, compact application."

All this can now be managed from a single console. Trend Micro Mobile Security version 5 (TMMS 5.0) uses the OfficeScan Client/Server Edition 8.0 console which also manages medium business and enterprise PC and server security.  By installing TMMS 5.0 onto their OSCE 8.0 console, existing customers use a single console to manage mobile devices, desktop PCs and enterprise servers. Customers not presently using OSCE 8.0 receive an OSCE 8.0 console license with their TMMS 5.0 purchase.
