Leading retailer Myer's has won a deal to be the first to stock the
highly anticipated Eee notebook from Asus. The company's Sydney store
will have a while day to make the most of being first with other Myer
stores getting access to the product the day after.
Myer Sydney will be selling the new sub-notebook on the December 1st,
while the rest of the stores around the country will stock it from 2
December 2007. The recommended retail price will be A$499 (inc GST) as
expected.
The notebook, which was originally designed for the education market
has been generating a great deal of interest in mobile computer users.
Pitched as the "world's easiest PC", the device was initially
announced in June at the Computex trade exhibition in Taipei. As
something of a competitor to the OLPC's XO, the Eee PC was initially
intended to be sold only through tender, but interest in the device has
prompted the company to offer it direct through retail.
Interest in the device, which company statements have even described as
a "gadget", stems from the small footprint and its emphasis on mobile
Internet access. Named for three Es (Easy to learn, Easy to work, Easy
to play) the personal computer runs on Linux out of the box, but the
company says it will also run Microsoft's Windows Vista. The Eee PC is
more compact than most PCs and is lightweight and rugged with flash
storage rather than a traditional hard disk drive.
Ted Chen, Managing Director of ASUS Australia, said: "Applications on
PCs today are mostly online, whether it is checking emails and
communicating via other methods such as instant messaging or Voice over
IP, utilising online share spaces, or simply reading news. Being online
has now become a big part of daily computing operations for work and
fun, for young and old.
"ASUS is very excited with the release of the Eee PC to the retail
market. Myer is a market leader in Australian retailing and we are
thrilled to be partnering with them. ASUS have heard Australian
consumers' calls and with Myer's support we will be able to distribute
the Eee PC to the wider consumer community."
George Papacosta, National Electrical Merchandise Manager of Myer,
said, "Myer is pleased to have been selected as ASUS' partner of choice
in supplying the Eee PC to its customers. With the holidays on the
horizon, we foresee the Eee PC will be high on this year's Christmas
lists, as it is affordable and a definite must have."
Apart from the fact that the device is highly portable and cheap, the
device is ideal for travellers, students and anybody who is always on
the move. Although its users are probably limited compared to a fully
fledge notebook or desktop computer, the device will serve well as a
second or backup computer in the home and it will arrive just in time
for Christmas.
