Stepping up its attack on the mobile data market, Vodafone has slashed the pricing of its broadband plans to include a generous 5GB plan for A$39 per month.

Though it's a delayed response to 3 mobile's launch of x-series mobile plans earlier this year, Vodafone has timed its launch for the frantic Christmas shopping period. The service is offered at 3.6Mbps initially, but the free modems included in the subscriptions is capable of running at 7.2Mbps, so as Vodafone rolls-out its network upgrades to that standard subscribers will be able to take advantage of the higher speeds.

The 3.6Mbps network should deliver users speeds around 600kbps to 1.5Mbps if they are withing the High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) footprint located in the greater metropolitan areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Central Coast, Adelaide and Perth. All major airports are also covered.

The 5GB 24-month data contract comes with either a free Vodafone Mobile Connect USB modem or the recently launched E800 Expresscard, both valued at A$299.00 and this deal is also available to existing customers. Current Vodafone 3G Broadband customers who've subscribed to the 100MB and 300MB 12-month and 24-month contracts can easily migrate to the new 5GB plan, retaining their contract term and with no penalty.

Although the company says that some existing customers on higher data plans may need to pay a fee to move to the new plan. This fee is dependent on the residual time remaining on their original contract.

Tim Cowan, Data Marketing Manager at Vodafone Australia, said: "Vodafone has invested wisely to build a mobile broadband network that provides coverage where it really counts. Vodafone is a challenger brand and we're first again with the best deal for customers by a country mile!"

"This plan makes mobile broadband more affordable for many Australian customers and ends the traditional view that mobile broadband is the exclusive domain of business customers," added Cowan.

A warning though. Don't delay. This offer is only available between 3 December and 31 December 2007.

Usage over included data is charged at 10c per MB. Vodafone Mobile Internet operates at slower access and download speeds on Vodafone's GPRS network (which covers 92% of the places customers live and work in Australia).
