Samsung has unveiled a new edition of the Q1 UMPC called the Ultra
Premium at this year's CES show in Las Vegas. The new ultra-portable
features an 80 GB 1.8"
ultra-small hard disk drive, a fingerprint reader, an SD/MMC 2-in-1
memory slot better processing and battery life, says the company.
Inside is a 1.33GHz ULV Intel Core Solo U1500 Pentium CPU
running at a clock speed of 1.33 GHz and a standard 1 GB of DDR2 RAM
and a Lithium Ion polymer 6-cell
battery that will provide up to 7.5 hours of battery life even though it has swapped the low powered SSD drive storage for a stnadaard spinning disk. The
package is still "under two pounds" and Samsungf says this new model features the
split-QWERTY keypad, so it sounds as though the look of the device hasn't changed much.
It seems this update is about faster processing, more storage, security and stability for the busines market.
"Since pioneering the UMPC form factor with the introduction of the
original Q1, Samsung has been unwavering in its commitment to the
long-term growth and development of this fast-growing mobile computing
product segment," said Bret Berg, senior product marketing manager,
mobile computing products, Samsung Electronics America, Inc.
"With the
Q1 Ultra Premium, Samsung has leveraged Intel's Ultra Low Voltage
Pentium CPU to deliver an even higher-performing solution for those
needing to support the latest and most advanced applications."
It is still less than a year (May 2007) since Samsung introduced the
second generation UMPC, the Q1 Ultra and like the earlier Q1 Ultra's
this new Ultra Premium UMPC is ready for enhanced connectivity with
integrated 802.11b/g
Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, although 3G broadband is sadly still
missing.
Out of range from you favorite hot spot that's going to make the 300
pixel webcam and dual-array
microphone an island, but within range of a Wi-Fi network video
conferencing should work fine. In addition to the webcam, the device
has a 1.3 mega pixel camera. The display is still a seven inch screen
in this case a wide WSVGA LED
backlit LCD with touch screen and a native resolution of
1024 x 600. (these specs are the same as for the Q1 Ultra)
The Q1 Ultra UMPCs also integrate the AVS Now instant-on
feature, allowing users to enjoy a host of multimedia applications,
including video, movies, music and still photos, without booting up
Windows.
There are a range of Ultra Premium accessories including a docking
station with three USB 2.0 ports, an additional battery
charger slot, audio-out and microphone-in ports, GPS navigation
receiver, and an external
USB-based keyboard with point stick and mouse select buttons. You can also obtain things like carrying cases, 8-cell
extended batteries and a charger.
The initial Q1 Ultra Premium UMPC (Q1UP-XP) as the name suggests is
equipped with Microsoft Windows XP Tablet Edition
and will retail for around US$1,399.00, but the introduction of the new
UMPC will see the price of the old devices being cut by Samsung, so
there could be some bargains to be had if you don't need the latest and
greatest.
