Apple has expanded its notebook range adding a new formfactor that takes advantage of the sort of miniaturisation found in its iPod and iPhone devices to deliver what it claims is the world's slimest notebook at 0.76 inches.

And that's at its thickest point. Apple has accentuated the thin look of the MacBook Air by slimming it down where it can. At its thinnest point the new notebook measures an impressive 0.16-inches. Apple says the thickest point is still thinner than the thinnest point on competing notebooks.

"We've built the world's thinnest notebook-without sacrificing a full-size keyboard or a full-size 13-inch display," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO in his Keynote address at Macworld 2008 in San Francisco. "When you first see MacBook Air, it's hard to believe it's a high-performance notebook with a full-size keyboard and display. But it is."

The MacBook Air uses a 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display and has a full-size and backlit keyboard and a a spacious trackpad with multi-touch gesture support much like the iPhone screen which allows users to "pinch, rotate and swipe" enhancing the interface capabilities.

The new notebook is powered by either a 1.6 GHz or 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4MB L2 cache, and comes standard with 2GB of RAM and an 80GB 1.8-inch hard drive. This small form factor drive (as used in the iPod) is one of the key elements of the slim technology used in the new MacBook. There is an optional 64GB solid state drive and owners can also purchase a companion external drive specifically designed for the MacBook Air (US$99). The MacBook Air SuperDrive is powered by MacBook Air's USB port, eliminating the need to carry a separate power adapter.

Apple is claiming a five hour battery life for the device which connects using the Draft 802.11n specification.

The new MacBook Air will be shipping in two weeks through the Apple Store® (www.apple.com), Apple's retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of $1,799 (US), and
