Sporting a huge 3-inch, full VGA display and a wide QWERTY keyboard to rival the Nokia E90, the new Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 targets the premium end of the lifestyle smartphone market with the company's first foray into Windows Mobile devices.

The pitch is a very Windows one, with Sony Ericsson saying it has equipped the phone to  let users do a "dynamic range of activities at anytime and anywhere". In fact the phone is clearly highly configurable with the desktop 'panels'(see picture) user selectable allowing you to set up the phone for easy access to the different "experiences" it has to offer - Web, multimedia and applications.

While the company has leverage its Cyber-shot and Walkman brands effectively, it hasn't until now had a smartphone brand: XPERIA is set to change all that.

"XPERIA represents the first brand that is truly borne from within Sony Ericsson. It represents our vision for a premium, energised communication experience," said Dee Dutta, Head of Marketing, Sony Ericsson. "This launch, and the announcement of the X1, further strengthens the overall Sony Ericsson brand and places us at the forefront of mobile convergence."

"Our vision for the XPERIA X1 is to deliver a seamless blend of mobile Web communication and multimedia entertainment within a distinctive design," said Rikko Sakaguchi, Head of Portfolio and Propositions, Sony Ericsson. "XPERIA is our promise to think foremost of user experience and to deliver the premium experience - anytime, anywhere, anything, with anyone."

Sony Ericsson also highlights the ability to navigate in a variety of different ways: by the touchscreen, the QWERTY keyboard, a 4-way key and that optical joystick.

On the form factor side, the X1 has a unique Arc slider design allowing for a slight angle between screen and keyboard to allowing for a better typing/viewing angle.

The phone has 3G HSDPA support and WiFi along with a host of other features including a 3 megpixel camera and aGPS support.
