Toshiba plans to lift ht elevel of outsourcing for its notebooks from 40 percent to 60 percent in the coming year, with Taiwan-based manufacturers keen to take up the opportunity.

According to the Digitimes wire service, Toshiba has confirmed the move to outsource the production of around four million notebook computers to Taiwan. Currently, Compal Electronics, Inventec and Quanta Computer produce notebooks for Toshiba in Taiwan.

Digitimes is predicting that Compal will get the bulk (70%) of that business and is expected to make more than 2.5 million machines for Toshiba.

In all, this means Toshiba is expected to account for some 8 percent of the notebook output from Taiwan this year. – up from current level of 5 percent.

Toshiba remain committed to the high-end of the notebook market, but will continue to deliver entry-level machines. In Asia Pac, according to IDC results, Toshiba ranked third in 2004 with a market share of 10.5 percent.

PC Analyst at IDC Australia, Mike Sager points out that Tosh hasn’t been out of the number one spot in the notebook market much recently. Seven out of the last nine calendar quarters is a good record to maintain during a time of leadership change.

“Once in a while someone might tip them into second place,” said Sager. “It is very difficult to be number one all the time.”

The first time was second quarter 2003. It happened was because HP was doing great deals bundling an iPaq with their notebooks. The second time was first quarter this year. There are probably a lot of factors at play in Toshiba’s most recent shove into second place. It had an absolute standout quarter at the end of 2004, getting a lot of stock out into the channel one month is hard to do again the next quarter.
