Vodafone
has announced it has extended the retail and
wholesale partnership with mobile phone retailer Crazy John's. Vodafone
scored the business originally after the phone retailer fell out with
previous partner Telstra.
The new deal will see the partnership extend "into the next
decade," says a company statement, though other media reports suggest
the deal could be a ten year agreement. Crazy John's began operating in
the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick back in 1991 under the name
Mobileworld by John Ilhan. Ilhan died suddenly of a heart attack about
six months ago in October last year.
Crazy John's, probably Australia's largest phone retailer was once a
major Telstra partner, but the two ended up in court with the retail
chain demanding Telstra pay millions of dollars in commissions. The two
companies parted company finally in July at the end of the contract
period. Vodafone
was able to secure the position as Crazy John's key network operator
supplier.
Brendan Fleiter,
Managing Director at Crazy John's, said: "Crazy John's
relationship with Vodafone brings out the best in our company and our people,
with high morale and strong sales. Business at Crazy John's has never
been more positive. This year alone, we'll open around 20 new
stores throughout Australia
to capitalise on Vodafone's national mobile broadband network
expansion."
The company currently has about 120 retail outlets around the company, but before his death, Ilhan had plans to extend the phone empire to overseas markets.
Vodafone this week announced it had contracted Ericsson to roll-out a
major network expansion and upgrade to HSDPA mobile broadband allowing
the company to deliver services to 95 per cent of the Australian
population.
