The latest in
Fujitsu Australia's Lifebook range is the newly released P8010 which
the company is billing as the "must have" notebook for 2008. It may not
be as slim as Apple's 13.3-inch MacBook Air, but at least you will get
a built-in optical drive with the 12.1-inch LifeBook P8010. You will
also get Ethernet and more than one USB port, too.
Although it's
tempting to compare every new ultra-portable with the MacBook Air, the
comparison in this case is not really justified. The P8010is neither
Fujitsu smallest or lightest mobile computer. For the feature set,
however, Fujitsu has crammed a great deal into this ultra-portable
starting with an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor SL7100 which delivers a
very healthybattery life that the company rates at over 6 hours. In a
1.3kg notebook that's a lot of working time.
One of the reasons for the low power consumption is the use of the
increasingly popular LED backlit displays, but Fujitsu has elected to
use a traditional notebook hard drive rather than a solid state drive
which keeps the price down, but the power consumption up. It does mean
however, that you get a decent sized storage allocation with the P8010
featuring a healthy 250GB capacity.
Design-wise, we've only seen the photos, but this LifeBook is a good
looking piece of exquipment with a high-gloss casing featuring an
accent line across it which was inspired by the joints of a bamboo.
The display is a 12.1" Wide 1280 x 800 WXGA SuperFine TFT display,
which, thanks to the LED backlighting, has a brightness rating of
300nits and a Contrast Ratio of 400:1. The Intel SL7100
(1.2GHz/800MHz/4M L2 cache) CPU is teamed with a Mobile Intel GS965
Express Chipset.
With an optical drive that writes Dual Layer DVDs, this A$2,899
notebook is built with 1GB Intel Turbo Memory and Intel AGN WiFi.
Bluetooth, a built-in SD memory card slot, three USB ports, fingerprint
scanner and 1.3 Mega Pixel camera round out a reassuring feature set
for the mobile worker.
The P8010 has a set of blue LED-lit function buttons which can be user
configured or used to do thinks like configure projector settings,
access the Fujitsu help site or download driver updates. And of course,
the LifeBook logo lights up when you power the unit on.
Some reviewers have commented on the size of the P8010 keyboard, though
all seem to get along with it. Perhaps the keyboard shrunk to make way
for a large 70mm x 43mm (81mm diagonally) touchpad.
3D Shock
Sensor for decreasing the risk of damage to the Hard Disk Drive, thus prolonging
your notebook's lifespan and pre-empting the possibility of unnecessary and
potentially expensive data loss. The P8010 even has the ability to prevent
theft as it automatically locks your notebook when sudden movement is detected.
Without your password, unauthorised users will not be able to gain access to
your notebook. The finger-print reader also functions as a scroll.
