Sony Ericsson has made a bid for the pockets of young Australians with the release of a new high speed Internet phone for the connected K660i.

Priced at $399, this new candy bar is available in two colour: lime or wine. With HSDPA, the K660i is equipped for fast Web surfing, email and video or music downloads.

The phone features a number of innovations designed to make the difficult job of surfing the Web on a small screen, just a little bit easier. The phone's navigation key works like a "magnetic mouse pointer" so you can move around a Web page almost as though you were using a PC mouse. The phone indicates what parts of the page are clickable and where you can input text.

The browser has pan-and-zoom functions assigned to Web shortcut keys that sit under your thumb when viewing Web pages in landscape mode. You can choose a section on screen and then zoom in close enough to read or see more detail. There is also a Bookmark function, a Home Page button and an ‘Enter Address' shortcut. The illuminated shortcut keys only become active when surfing the Net and have the effect of maximising screen real estate in landscape mode says the company.

"Sony Ericsson's vision is to deliver ‘Generation Web', a mobile internet experience that's rich, intelligent, user-friendly and satisfying," said Josh Oxspring, Head of Marketing Oceania for Sony Ericsson. "The Web-optimised K660i really does deliver that vision and, as such, will appeal to individuals who are managing their busy lives and social networks online."

Sony Ericsson has equipped the K660i with Google Maps software, so you can access the free service to find your location, get interactive maps that let you zoom in or out, and pan in any direction to orient yourself. Enter your current location and destination and receive point-to-point directions.
