The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has approved the formation of a .mobi domain next year.
The namespace will be sold and managed by a joint-venture company formed by Microsoft, Vodafone, Nokia, Ericsson, 3, Samsung, T-mobile and the GSM association, among others under a 10 year contract with ICANN.
Called mTLD Top Level Domain Ltd, the company should commence registrations in the first hald of next year, giving precedence to trademark holders for the first three months. After that honeymoon period the plan is to hold the domain open for generic names listings.
The TLD is meant for sites which have content formatted for the capabilities of mobile phones and other mobile devices. Mobile device optimisation will be a requirement and use of a style guide will be mandated as part of the registration contract.
