Industry research outfit In-Stat acknowledges the Tablet PC market has been patchy, but is predicting “some significant” growth over the next four years.
PCs that run Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system, will rise from US$1.2 billion in 2004 to US$5.4 billion in 2009, the high tech market research firm says.
A recent report by In-Stat found that tablets were of interest in vertical markets, such as healthcare, real estate, insurance, and sales force automation, for the leading Tablet PC vendors. These included Acer, Fujitsu, HP, Toshiba and Motion Computing as worldwide leaders in the market.
But the future growth is likely to come from the integration of Tablet PC features into Longhorn (currently Windows Vista) and the announcement of Microsoft’s Ultra Mobile 2007 portable PC form factor could also have a significant impact of future shipments, said In-stat.
"Broad horizontal corporate markets should start to make an impact on the market in 2005, as average selling prices fall well below $2,000," says Brian O'Rourke, In-Stat analyst. "A combination of greater Tablet PC software availability and larger form factors that directly address the corporate market should help Tablet PC sales."
