Results for the second quarter shipments of WLAN hardware from Taipei reached just over 25 million units representing a year-on-year growth of 91%.

The vast majority of this was WLAN NICs (23.5 million units) which was more than double this time last year, while Access Point shipments amounted to 1.5 million units – a slight year-on-year fall of 1.8%.

Although shipment volume of AP, which has a high ASP, declined, the large growth of NIC shipment volume pushed shipment value to US$396.2 million, year-on-year increase of 32.5%, according to researcher the Market Intelligence Center (MIC).

Taiwanese manufacturers are responsible for about 80% share of the worldwide WLAN industry.

Growth in sales to Intel and the rise and rise of Centrino notebooks are fuelling the growth. At the end of the second quarter 65% of worldwide notebook PC shipments used Centrino, but that doesn’t count the number of non-Centrino notebook with WLAN.

The researcher also says that MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) technology is triggering a new wave of interest in wireless and the increasing use in CE offerings like Sony’s PSPs and PDAs is also driving the component market.

The second half of the year should see the price differential between MIMO and standard 802.11g decrease further driving that platform. A price war in MIMO components is even a possibility points out MIC.
