Telstra has announced it will exclusively offer Commonwealth Games coverage to its BigPond and 3G mobile customers in a deal with Channel 9.

The deal has frozen out customers of network partner Hutchison which carried the Turino Winter Olympics for for its Three subscribers.

But the deal goes further than 3G wireless with Telstra also getting the Commonwealth Games coverage by the Nine Network exclusively for BigPond users.

The direct feed of Channel Nine's Games coverage will be streamed live on the Internet and up to eight channels of live content and highlights will be available for Telstra 3G mobile customers. All the content will be offered free.

BigPond Group Managing Director, Justin Milne, said "Aussie sports fans will be able to get their fix of the Commonwealth Games anywhere there is broadband or 3G coverage, whether they're sitting in the office, on a train, waiting in the bank queue or at the beach," Mr Milne said. "Telstra customers won't need to miss any of the excitement of the Commonwealth Games.

Telstra has also hooked up with Microsoft to make sure the content works with Windows XP Media Center Edition. Microsoft Australia Director Windows XP, Jeff Putt, said, "Microsoft's work with Telstra demonstrates our commitment to bringing high quality, localised content to the Windows platform and supports our aim of giving people legal access to the content they want, when they want it and how they want it.

"The Commonwealth Games is one of the most exciting and highly anticipated sporting events of 2006. We are proud to partner with Telstra to give Australians more choice and flexibility over how they watch the Games and through Media Center help ensure they don't miss any of the action."
