In what is believed to be Australia’s first trial of the super-fast wireless broadband standard WiMax, Austar and SP Telemedia have announced Wagga residents will get the first chance to try out the new technology.
According to a report by The Australian, the first commercial trials will include Wagga Wagga due to the aggregate demand, but other regions will be close behind.
SP Telemedia chief executive Michael Simmons told The Australian: "Wagga is a definite pilot. We're in discussions with a couple of regions that we'd like to move into sooner than others because of aggregated demand."

The grand plan is to roll out the Austar network across 55 regional centres covering some 750,000 regional homes.

Some non-commercial pilots of the new technology have already been held in Australian including an Intel showcase at the Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne where it was demonstrated sending X-rays from a trackside medical centre at the Grand Prix circuit to the Alfred Hospital.

Intel has made a long term commitment to the technology and is expected to include WiMax connectivity in its notebook chipsets starting next year.
