3G network operator 3 has introduced MSN Messenger services to its services list, but users will need to download the app and pay $5 for 30 days.
That’s pretty steep for a free messenger service, even if it does offer unlimited usage, but for high volume SMS users the service could look pretty cheap. Given that the service could potentially impact the volume of lucrative SMS messages sent over the network, the service could be seen as a risk for the company. General Manager of Content and Services, Scott Taylor, said that "From customer feedback we know that the ability to have instant conversations with your friends, wherever you are is very compelling and we expect to see even more frequent interaction between mobile-to-mobile and PC-to-mobile customers." Three is making the MSN Messenger service available on Sony Ericsson k608i, and z800 handsets, as well as the LG 8138, 8180, 8330, 8360, 8380, u880, u890 and Motorola v3X. However, the company hopes to expand this list in the future.
