Nokia has agreed to pay wireless technology company InterDigital US$253 million to resolve a dispute over 2G royalties. In exchange for the dollars Nokia will get access to a patent license covering sales of 2G TDMA-based products, which consist mainly of GSM/GPRS/EDGE terminal units and infrastructure. The agreement will terminate a previous patent license agreement originally signed in 1999 and scheduled to terminate at the end of 2006. The deal doesn't get Nokia off the hook. The US$253 million only covers Nokia for sales of devices up until April 26 this year, anything sold after that date is unlicensed with a deal yet to be negotiated.
