Wives of seven Government Officials in Cambodia have petitioned Prime Minister Hun Sen to ban 3G phones as they believe the video capabilities will be used to help spread pornography.
According to this report the wives include those of Cabinet Minister Sok An, former National Assembly president Prince Norodom Ranariddh and the wife of Supreme Court President Dith Monty.
A report in the local newspaper, The Cambodia Daily, said they have accused the phones of “destroying Khmer culture and polluting the minds of teenagers”
"We are all very concerned that bad people will use modern communication and information technology in the wrong direction and it will make a serious negative effect on morality and social welfare," warned the wives.
The petition also called for the government to "seriously punish" anyone found to be using the phones to attract men into sexual relations by sending them explicit pictures.
"We all would like to request the royal government to issue a regulation prohibiting the individual use of this modern phone," the petition noted.
Telecommunications company MobiTel plans to introduce a 3G video phone network next month.
Headed up by Kith Meng, president of the Phnom Penh Chamber of Commerce, the 3G network looks perilously close to not getting off the ground.
It looks as though the final decision could probably come down to Prime Minister Hun Sen and his own wife is one of those backing the petition.
