Freeing itself from the doomed Telstra CDMA network, Primus Telecommunications has announced it will start reselling Optus GSM to its customers in the consumer market.
Announcing the launch of Primus Mobile Managing Director of Primus Telecom, Greg Wilson, said “The new mobile service recognises the relevance of mobile telephony as an adjunct and alternative for fixed line telephones in some market segments.
The deal with Optus will see Primus add post-paid mobile services bundled in with their existing residential home phone and Internet services.
“Our focus will be on providing outstanding value through competitive rates and flexible plans, with a comprehensive range of the latest mobile handsets. As with our home phone and Internet services, we will be offering some of the most competitive mobile phone plans and bundled savings available,” he said.
Primus Mobile users will get a $10 discount on each mobile service each month when bundling with the company’s other services.
Capped post-paid plans, handset subsidies and tailored call rate reductions are all part of the new range of plans.
According to pres reports Primus will scale back its reliance on Telstra’s CDMA network, but will not force customers to make the switch. In fact, reports were that the company was being decidedly unclear about how Telstra's GSM network figures into its plans for business users, despite also planning to offer Optus services to that market segment.
A spokesman for Primus told The Australian that business customers wanting to stay with Telstra would have the option, but that the company’s marketing efforts would go toward the Optus service.
