After making its way to a top five position in the global PC market,
Taiwan-based Acer now has its sights set on the GPS and PDA markets,
with more devices scheduled for release in the second half of this year.
According to DigiTimes, Acer plans to add two Taiwan-based ODM makers, Wistron and Compal Communications, to its supplier list for GPS and PDA devices which will significantly increase its supply capabilities.
Acer currently only uses Lite-On Technology for contract manufacturing of its handheld devices.
Acer has said previously that intends to bolster its handheld revenues to US$1 billion a year and to do this it plans to launch two GPS devices - one a handheld model, the other for in-car-use.
There’s also a GPS-enabled PDA and a PDA/phone planned according to the DigiTimes report.
Wistron is believed to be lining up the contract to make Acer's new handheld GPS device, while Lite-On will manufacture the in-car GPS device.
Compal Communications is expected to become the contract manufacturer for Acer's new PDA phone, which contradicts earlier reports that Quanta Computer would get the business.
