Page 1 of 2 It's not often that Mobilised speaks out about errors in
online reporting (God knows we've made errors ouselves), but this story really bugs us. And since the author seems disinclinded to correct the misconception it contains we'll do it ourselves.
A story currently running in the Herald Sun Survival
Guide: How To Create PDF Files from Danny Gorog's blog, is little more than
disinformation. We've contacted the Herald Sun pointing out that creating PDFs
is not complicated and nor should it cost anything.
Gorog correctly points out that Adobe opened the PDF
standards technology so that users don't have to pay a licence fee each time
they create a PDF file, but then goes on to write: "Creating a PDF is slightly
more complex than reading one. You'll need to pay for Adobe Acrobat, which
installs extensions on your computer allowing you to export any document as a
PDF."
This is absolute rubbish there are a wealth of free PDF
creation solutions available online and the file sizes are small enough that
anybody with even a dial-up connection can download one, use it and make PDF
files from any application for free. No malware, no spyware, just free (please
get your creator from a reputable source though).
Just try a Google
Search on PDF Creators and you'll get more options for easily creating PDFs
than you can fit on your hard drive.
Instead, Gorog suggests the Herald Sun readers use the online converter at
Adobe's website. "An easier and cheaper way to create PDF files is to use the
online converter available at Adobe. Visit createpdf.adobe.com and you can
create up to five PDF files free.
"Or you can sign up to create an unlimited number for about $14 a month," he
writes.
While Mobilised admits to only trying the free online PDF
creation system on the Adobe website once - it didn't work - we can't see why he
thinks paying $14 a month to create PDFs online is a more valid way of reaching
your objective that downloading a free PDF creation tool.
Most of these PDF creators integrate into your application
via the Print command. By selecting the create PDF option instead of your
regular printer, the downloaded software intercepts the print output from the
application and converts it to a PDF simple, no settings, just hit print.
