samsung_ultra_rangeMasters of miniaturisation in cell phone technology, Samsung has done it again with another world first. New ‘Ultra Editions' phones launched at CommunicAsia 2006 in Singapore are the world's slimmest mobile phones. The new phones are not only powerful and slimmer than ever, says Samsung, their size disguises their strength.

Demonstrating Samsung's vision for the future of mobile communications the new range includes a GSM phone only 6.9mm thin. Also in the new range are phones at 9.9mm and 12.9mm.

Accordingly, Samsung has given the phones model numbers that reflect their relative ‘thinness'. The Ultra Edition 6.9 (X820) is the new candy bar flagship, while the Ultra Edition 12.9 (D900) is the world's slimmest slider at 12.9mm. The Ultra Edition 9.9 (D830) is now the world's slimmest clamshell at 9.9mm.

Samsung says it has designed the phones to achieve a balance between thin design and inner strength making these phones more durable that before by using new materials and technology.

The thin design is made possible thanks to Samsung's Smart Surface Mounting Technology (SSMT) which reduces the number of components and noise between components. The strength and durability is achieved by using new materials such as magnesium and fibreglass-infused plastic are used, which decrease the weight of the handsets while increasing durability.

The innovation goes beyond cramming the same functions into a smaller form factor, though. Samsung has used the 12.9 to introduce uWorld a feature jointly developed by Samsung and Adobe. The adaptive user interface responds to the user's environments. So for example, the main screen will display a landmark picture of the city you are located in, even adjusting the picture to the time of day or night.

The phones all feature cameras with high resolution video recording capability, multi-format music players, Bluetooth stereo headset support and advanced file viewers with support for TV output.

The SPH-N2000, released in 2001, marked Samsung's first foray into slim mobiles with advanced features. This was the company's first well-received 9.8mm mobile phone. Motivated by its early success, Samsung will continue to create slim mobiles in various form factors and features to meet the needs of discerning customers around the world.
