Lexar Media is offering a free trial version of a new
software platform which allows you to run any Windows application directly off
your USB flash drive. Unfortunately the software only works with JumpDrive
drives.
Oh and the other "unfortunately" is that after the trial
period users will be given the option of purchasing the full version for
US$29.95.
The PowerToGo software lets you install and run many
standard Windows applications directly from the drive letting you virtually "carry"
your familiar PC environment with you wherever you go.
The software is based on a solution from Ceedo Technologies and
technically should work on any Lexar drive, though the company recommends using
a speed-rated High-Performance product, such as the JumpDrive Lightning.
In fact, Lightning owners will enjoy an automatic upgrade to
a full version of the PowerToGo platform free of charge - all they need to do
is install the trial software.
Future sales of 1GB and 2GB JumpDrive Lightning drives will
come pre-loaded with a full version of PowerToGo.
There are more than one hundred ‘pre-approved' applications
which can be loaded onto the drive with a single click.
However, if you want to load up an application that is not
on the pre-approved list, you then have to buy another piece of software called
"InstallAnything" which will set you back another US$29.95. That still only
allows you to load "many" Windows applications.
There must be an open source equivalent to this. If anybody
knows send me an email and I'll post it for everybody's benefit. In the
meantime, if you want to try out PowerToGo you can download it at http://www.lexar.com/powertogo/index.html
