It looks like Korean phone maker LG has a hit on its hands
with Chocolate, the first in a series of Black Label phones from the company.
The phone sold more than one million units globally in the
first eight weeks of its release in early May.
The latest
reports suggest that LG Electronics has already sold 1.7 million of the
devices since its launch just over two months ago.
"When we created the Chocolate phone we knew had a
special product on our hands, but the scale of success after just one month of
sale in UK
has surpassed our expectations," Simon Hahm, President of Europe Business
Division of Mobile Communications Company of LG Electronics told Cellular News.
"Our retail partners around the world have completely bought into the
phone's ethos and appeal as a designer, desirable product and this has
undoubtedly helped increase sales of the phone."
Demand for the phone has even caused supply shortages as the
manufacturing giant struggles to keep up. The phone's release in the Middle East is currently experiencing significant pre-release
orders.
Chocolate, the brand name for LG's KG800 phone is no longer
alone in the company's stable of premium phones. The company recently announced
that Chocolate would be available in new versions later this year. including white
and pink handsets as well as a new ‘premium' Chocolate phone with unique design
variations and enhanced technical specifications.
"As the first handset under the Black Label premium brand,
Chocolate has been an amazing international success, smashing sales records in
many countries," explains Jae Bae, Executive Vice President of Mobile
Communications Company of LG Electronics.
"It's important to continue to develop the Chocolate family
to build on this success, which is why LG is expanding the range, giving
Chocolate even wider appeal."
The new coloured chocolate handsets are already enjoying significant sales
success in South Korea
and, following in-depth research among 18 and 35 year olds around the globe,
the decision has been taken to introduce the phones to select international
markets.
The decision to launch particular handsets will be decided on a country by
contry basis, however.
