Working with Japan's Softbank Group, Motorola is embarking
on a trial to test out a WiMax network in Tokyo, the cell phone maker will
develop a a number of prototype WiMax handsets to use in the trial.
The end-to-end WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e-2005) deployment will include
access points and an access network as well as the handsets to test the veracity
of the mobile high speed broadband networking technology.
Expected to begin in September this year, the five-month
trial will focus on the performance of WiMAX in the 2.5GHz spectrum. The test
will check on throughput and range, as well as the speed of network handovers
between access points.
While only five WiMAX access points will be deployed, the
plan is to test 25 WiMAX mobile devices.
Motorola is heavily involved in WiMax deployment plans and recently
won a nationwide contract to deploy a WiMAX 802.16e network in Pakistan.
"Forward-looking service providers today clearly see the potential of WiMAX as
a viable and crucial wireless broadband technology to deploy seamless mobility
services," said Dr. Simon Leung, regional president, Asia Pacific, Motorola.
"As a pioneer in WiMAX, Motorola is committed to providing such innovative
technology to fast growing telecommunications markets such as Japan."
In Australia
the 2.5GHz spectrum is controlled by Unwired and Austar effectively shutting
Telstra out of the market. Telstra has committed to deploying low frequency GSM
technologies instead.
Motorola's MOTOwi4 is a portfolio of wireless broadband
solutions and services that creates, complements and completes IP networks.
Delivering coverage to virtually all spaces, MOTOwi4 includes wi4 WiMAX, wi4
Fixed Broadband, wi4 Mesh, and wi4 Broadband over Power Line solutions for
private and public networks.
Softbank, which recently acquired Vodafone's Japan network offers a range of fixed-line
telecommunications and fixed-line broadband services and has more than 26
million fixed-line and mobile customers in Japan.
Since its launch of the Yahoo! BB ADSL service in September 2001, the company's
wired broadband service has reached more than 5 million subscribers.
