Motorola's first ever GSM slider takes its
design queues from the RAZR phone's as much as from competing slider phones (I'm thinking LG Chocolate).
But like the new KRZR, the RIZR has a focus on narrowing the width of the phone
rather than making it thinner.
While the RAZR we all know is 52mm wide and the new KRZR is
just 42mm wide, the RIZR sits somewhere in the middle at 46mm. The RIZR weighs in
at an acceptable 116 grams and is 16mm thick.
The RIZR seems to be positioned short of the premium end of
the market, for buyers looking for the fabulous finish of the RAZR and a bit of
multimedia wizardry. If you are not sure that means you, Motorola describes it
as for the "socially active, on-the-go consumers who demand style, fun and
adventure".
The phone is equipped with a 2 megapixel camera that is
capable of video capture and playback. The camera has only a fixed lens, but
there is a high-intensity camera light and dedicated side camera key and
landscape viewfinder meaning you can hold it and use it like a digital camera.
Onboard storage for the RIZR is restricted to just 20MB,
barely enough for a couple of songs, but add a 1GB MicroSD card into the memory
slot and you have at least a little room for some pictures and a few CDs worth
of music. Codec support covers the usual audio formats: MP3, AAC, AAC+, and
AAC+ Enhanced.
The RIZR also has a flight-mode setting so you can take it
on-board and still listen to your tunes.
Motorola raves about the vivid colour display, but without
seeing the 1.9-inch (176 x 220) TFT LCD which is capable of the usual 262k colours,
its really hard to say how good this screen is.
Once you slide the RIZR open you are presented with some
nice large easy-to-use buttons for the phone, while on the back of the slide
Motorola has taken the trouble to "tattoo" the top back part of the phone's
slide.
Motorola says that to take full advantage of the slider and
make your life easier, you can do most anything in both the open and closed
positions-no need to constantly ‘open' the phone.
Quad-Band (GPRS/EDGE) functionality takes the phone most any
place. The RIZR supports a wide array of messaging capabilities including MMS
and IM. The Mobile Phone Tools software supports PC synch of phonebook,
contacts, and media via USB 2.0. Integrated is stereo to support your headset
for playing music.
The MOTORIZR is expected to be available in the second half
of 2006.
