There are only another four million orders required before
the One Laptop Per Child vision can be realised. Nigeria orders first million OLPC
laptops. The first order for a million of the low-cost notebook
computers has reportedly been placed by the Nigerian government.
The first
official order is a major boost for the not for profit enterprise which has
come in for both praise and criticism since it announced its mission to create
a US$100 laptop for children in developing countries back in January 2005 at
the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland
Although the price has crept up a little, the device is likely
to sell for US$140, will be powered by an AMD processor and Linux and more
recently announced - shoelaces.
The preferred method of providing electricity for the
ruggedised device was announced this week when OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) revealed
it was looking at a small clamshell style gizmo which is activated by pulling
on a piece of string. This power source will replace the hand crank mechanism
initially intended for the device.
According to the report the Nigerian Vanguard
newspaper says an official order has been placed and paid for, but it doesn't guarantee
the project will get off the ground.
Taiwanese notebook manufacturer Quanta is expected to make
the device once the charity has reached a milestone of 5 million firm orders,
so it has a little farther to do yet.
OLPC is hoping for orders from governments in China, India,
Brazil, Argentina, Egypt
and Thailand
will come to fruition.
