Just as China Mobile eclipsed Vodafone to become the largest
cell phone player in the world, Ericsson has announced a US$550 million deal to
expand the burgeoning company's GSM network.
The change in world wide market cap advantage came as
Vodafone's share value dropped 6 per cent on the back of continuing
difficulties for the company. In contrast, China Mobile, which only officially launched
in 2000, is now worth 46 per cent more than it was a year ago.
But it's not just on market cap, according to press reports,
China Mobile is also the leading mobile network operator in terms of subscriber
with a stunning customer list extending to more than 200 million users.
This just edges it ahead of Vodafone, which on last reports
had a paltry 186.8 million subscribers worldwide.
In all reality it's to be expected, but China Mobile numbers
could grow quite significantly, especially when Ericsson completes an
additional build out following the expansion of contracts it has the Hong Kong-listed
company.
Collectively worth more than US$550 million, the contracts
cover expansion projects in 17 regions with core and radio networks, along with
related technical support and services.
Ericsson will also deploy its Mobile Softswitch Solution.
The expansion projects will not only allow China Mobile to
boost network capacity while enhancing operational efficiency and cutting
costs, but also take an important step in realizing future network evolution.
Once installed the Ericsson supplied network alone will
support 200 million subscribers according to a press statement.
