aql, a company better known for its mobile messaging prowess,
has introduced a VoWLAN service that lets owners of eSeries Nokia Wi-Fi phones sign up by simplysending an SMS message.
The service is dead simple to sign up to and can be done by
just sending a text message with the word ‘nokia' to the company and then a
message will be sent back to automatically configure your phone.
The aql's network interacts directly with embedded software
in the handsets to enable high quality mobile calls to be made across the
internet. The handsets are configured remotely - users do not have to download
any additional software - and the service will be up and running within minutes,
says the company.
Unlike the Mobiboo service reported on here, aql has
not done any deals with hotspot providers, so you're pretty much on your own in
regards to Wi-Fi signal.
The accounts are free and so are the VoIP to VoIP calls,
while calls to land lines and other mobiles incur the usual charges. Actually
they look like good prices although we don't know what to expect in the UK
market calls to satellites certainly seem like a bargain. The call rates are
separated into peak and off peak making direct comparisons a little complicated.
The service supports music on hold, call transfer, call forward,
do not disturb, follow me call forwarding and you can view your history online.
Also when you make a call the Caller ID will show up as your normal mobile
phone number, which is pretty cool.
Subscribers can opt for a geographic number if they prefer
which is available at £2 per month.
The service of course works regardless of which GSM carrier
thephone is using as the WLAN connectivity is completely unrelated.
