Page 1 of 2 The new Windows Mobile-based Palm Treo 700 series has
launched in the U.S.
on the Sprint wireless network. The 700 series was previously launched on the
Verizon network back in May.
Powered by an Intel XScale 312MHz processor, the EvDO capable
device will connect to Sprint's Power Vision Network and should be available
now. The advertised US$499.99 is a price after available discounts and
promotions, says the company statement.
The big push with the Treo 700 is push email and Palm/Sprint
teams with Good Technologies for the Direct Push Technology. The services
available separately from Good also support native S/MIME, certificate-based
authentication to all Exchange data, and remote and local device wipe.
To make it easy to sign up for the service the Treo 700wx
has a ‘Get Good' application icon, allowing easy over-the-air provisioning of real-time
email, calendar, contacts, notes and tasks.
The Treo 700wx smartphone also supports Good Mobile Defense
for robust security and fleet management, as well as Good Mobile Intranet,
giving users access to web-enabled enterprise systems, including sales force
automation (SFA), customer relationship management (CRM) and corporate
intranets.
The 700wx may be used as an EvDO (1xRTT) modem for your
laptop delivering pretty fast wireless "broadbandlike" speeds. Yes they say "broadbandlike"
- we didn't even think that was a real word till now.
The phone connects to your laptop via USB so should be
pretty easy to get set up and using.
Sprint says its Power Vision service is the nation's largest
mobile broadband network offering "broadbandlike" data downloads averaging somewhere
in the region of 400-700 Kbps.
The Treo 700wx is Sprints first Windows Mobile Treo which
some will be pleased to hear. The built-in viewer/editors for Word, Excel and
PowerPoint as well as support for PDF files and the access to a large catalogue
of Windows Mobile third party applications will certainly please some Sprint customers.
With Windows on the device, ActiveSync will connect you to
your laptop or PC to synchronise files and folders. The music player is Windows
Media Player Mobile which integrates with Media Player 10 on the PC. Media
Player 10 is supplied on CD.
