Designed for the ultra professional on the move, this ultra portable weighs just 1.86kg and measures a little wider than a sheet of paper but is a fair bit thicker at 3.4cm more than 1 ¼ inch (29.9 x 22.5 x 3.4cm).

The 12.1 inch WXGA and DVD Super/Multi optical drive might not qualify the M500 as a multimedia notebook, but if you're always on a plane going to business meetings that widescreen format could make comfortable viewing on your lap.

Powered by the Intel T2300 Core Duo (1.63GHz, 667 FSB),  Intel 945 graphics chipset with 128MB shared graphics memory and Intel High Definition sound should make it a pleasant enough experience for the travelling viewer or doing a quick presentation on a café.

With an extended battery life, Protégé M500 owners can play movies continually for up to six hours, claims Toshiba.

The Toshiba Protégé M500 is pitched squarely at the business person on the run. Toshiba describes them the target market for the M500 as "small business owners and mobile workers who require high-end functionality and performance in a lightweight and ruggedised design".tecra_m500

Despite is ultra-portable name tag, the price is definitely business class and with the addition of Toshiba's EasyGuard features, the laptop comes with a car-like 3 year international parts and labour warranty which includes complimentary courier pick-up and return.

Plus if anything major fails during the Warrantee period the EasyGuard replacement guarantee means Toshiba will replace the entire laptop for you rather than make repairs.

The M500 has all the standard EasyGuard features including Toshiba's three-dimensional drop-detection sensor, which disengages the hard disk drive when the notebook is dropped or bumped.

The spill resistant keyboard will keep our latté out of the inside of the device, while the HDD, screen and casework or all beefed up help keep this device on the road with you and presumably to save Toshiba having to do a lot of repairs.

For security, as well as the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) for hardware encryption, the M500 also has a biometric fingerprint reader to keep the bad guys out of your data if you leave your M500 in a taxi.

The M500 comes standard with 512MB DDR2 533MHz (expandable to 4GB) and a 60GB SATA drive to complement the DVD. Modem, 1G-bit LAN, 802.11 a/b/g and high speed Bluetooth v2.0 +EDR round out the connectivity choice you'll have at your disposal.
