There are only a lucky group of 40 Vodafone customers in Sydney to get access to
the strictly limited pilot service, but they'll be enjoying wireless broadband
with download speeds up to 1.8 Mbps.
The Vodafone trial is focused around Sydney's
Lower North Shore
where the lucky business customers invited to the trial either work or live.
If all goes well, the trial will be a precursor to the first
commercial launch of HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) in Australia.
Services on the upgraded network will launch in Sydney and
Melbourne metropolitan areas before the end of the year with other metro areas
(hopefully) to follow.
The 40 customers Vodafone selected for the trial are all
current users of Vodafone Mobile Connect with 3G data cards. Vodafone got them
all together for a special briefing before hading out the new HSDPA/3G data
cards for them to put through the paces.
Edward Goff, General Manager, Business Markets at Vodafone Australia,
said: "Vodafone mobile broadband is a very attractive alternative to ADSL and
Wi-Fi. Why limit yourself to a cable connection or Wi-Fi hotspot, when you can
enjoy the freedom of mobile broadband anywhere within coverage areas?"
"As part of our quality assurance process, we validate all
major network upgrades with a small group of customers to ensure the full
commercial launch that follows provides the best possible experience to all
customers," added Goff.
"Prior to our 3G launch, our testing yielded the highest
customer satisfaction rating (97%) of any Vodafone operating company, and this
premium quality service standard continues to underpin the success and
popularity of Vodafone 3G services throughout Australia's major metropolitan
areas."
