Wireless mobile VoIP services in Australia could be available sooner
rather than later following the revelation that Personal Broadband Australia is
planning to offer a wireless VoIP service in partnership with Commander Communications.
Although the two companies initially expect the iBurst-based
service to be used in a fixed wireless mode using an IP-based PABX, it's only a
short step from there to deliver a softphone service direct to a laptop PC.
Wireless broadband users can already access IP Telephony services using Skype or by accessing another VoIP service provider using a softphone. The advantage with an iBurst/Commander solution will be the promise of better QoS as well as easier subscription and billing for existing iBurst customers.
Although no launch date has been set for the proposed iBurst VoIP service, the
two companies have completed field trials of the service according to this
report.
PBA managing director Jonathan Withers said that as the
solution requires components from both companies there is still some work to do
converting the successfully trialled technology into a product.
"Technically, it works but you actually have to create
a full product package for it because full service requires components that are
not directly provided by PBA," he said.
Commander Communications already offers IP Telephony
services to its customer base.
The companies plan to first offer the service to existing
Commander customers although it is expected a wider audience - including existing
PBA iBurst customers - will get access
to the solution and ultimately channel partners will be able to re-sell it said
the report.
