SanDisk has announced a 4GB miniSD High Capacity (SDHC)
flash card capable of storing more than 2,000 hi-res images, 8 hours of video
or more than 1,000 songs on a mobile phone.
The miniSDHC is only being produced in sampling quantities
at present with major phone manufacturers and mobile network operators getting
to play with the card ahead of a retail release some time next year.
Though standard miniSD and miniSDHC cards look identical in
size and shape, the cards are not backwards compatible so only SDHC-compatible
products will be able to accept the new miniSDHC cards.
The cards are based on the SD Association 2.0 specification.
The SDHC family designation will support capacities larger than 2GB. The new
specifications allow for capacities to reach 32GB.
The SD Association is an industry standards board. It also
defined three speed classes for speed and performance capabilities. The new
SanDisk cards announced adhere to the SD Speed Class 2 Rating which defines a
minimum sustained transfer speed for SDHC cards.
"The 4GB miniSDHC card represents a significant
technological breakthrough and highlights the growing need for large-capacity,
high-speed storage for the mobile phone market," said Yoram Cedar, executive
vice president of handset business and corporate engineering at SanDisk.
