Business people who only travel infrequently have always
been disadvantaged in the connectivity stakes. Most wireless broadband access providers
focus on regular travellers who they can sign up for contracts with regular
monthly payments.
The occasional traveller is generally relegated to looking
for a McDonalds with a Hot Spot or using the inflated broadband connection in
their hotel room.
Perhaps things are about to change. Spin Internet Sevices is
now offering what it calls a mobile broadband rental channel. The program allows
travellers to rent an iBurst wireless broadband card and connection for a week.
The plans, which have a healthy 1GB allowance cost $59.95 per week.
The rental agreement requires a A$300 security deposit on
the hardware and a A$10 delivery fee.
The service is powdered by iBurst so it's available in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra
and the Gold Coast. Perth and Adelaide are expected to be online by the end
of the year.
Bill McArthur, Marketing Manager of Spin Internet Services
says, "This broadband rental option gives the sales manager or the travel
coordinator the power to turn the staff member into a mobile office. The staff
member can check emails in the rental car or cab. Download files at the
client's location."
"The car rental clerk can now ask their clients if they'd
like broadband with there car rental. We are also looking for other partnership
opportunities with companies that organize business travel"
Spin's channel sales focus will be on getting the word out
to companies directly and car rental firms. As this service is completely
mobile the client can leave the hotel and get online anywhere coverage is
available.
