Laptop maker Toshiba is the latest manufacturer to join the
worldwide recall of Lithium Ion notebook batteris manufactured by Sony
Corp.
The company has announced it will replace 340,000 sold in Dynabook and Dynabook Satellite
laptops manufactured between March and May this year.
The issue with the batteries seems unrelated to the overheating,
explosion and potentially lethal problems experienced by Dell and
Apple. Toshiba exectuives said the fault was related to problems with
storing and transmitting
power and that the problems could not lead to fire.
Toshiba said the fault would only manifest in "rare" cases. The fault is said to be related to the insulation paper on a circuit that may cause corrosion. The fault causes the battery to stop charging.
This is another embarrassing and potentially expensive recall for Sony which is already at the centre of a 6.4 million unit recall with Dell and Apple.
