Nokia and Microsoft have
announced that future Nokia phones will use Microsoft search in a major
win for Microsoft Live that will put its portal in the hands of
millions of cell phone users.
By integrating Microsoft Live
Search capabilities into its Mobile Search platform, the world's
leading (by a long margin) phone manufacturer gives Microsoft Search a
big edge over rival Google.
Nokia Nseries devices and other compatible Nokia S60-based handsets will be able to access search results in 14 languages
as
well as get access to information such as stock quotes, movie times.
Microsoft's own encyclopedic Encarta resource will be on hand to
provide "Instant Answers" in some markets and the whole process is
being pitched as speeding the search process compared to using the
browser to navigate to an Internet search provider (read Google).
That's because the search function will (in many cases) be directly
accessible from the menu screen making the process URL transparent for
the user.
"Adding
the advanced searching capabilities of Microsoft's Live Search to our
Mobile Search platform provides our customers with unique and powerful
new ways to search the Internet on their multimedia computers and many
other compatible Nokia mobile devices," said Nokia's vice president for
Multimedia Experiences, Ralph Eric Kunz.
Microsoft's product unit manager of Live Search for mobile, John
DeVitis, was understated saying: "We are pleased to provide advanced
Live Search services to enhance the search experience on Nokia's S60
handsets. Live Search offers consumers unprecedented control and
personalization giving them easy access to searching the web plus
targeted instant information from their mobile devices."
The service
will not only be available in a range of new phones, but will be also
offered as a free download for select Nokia S60 devices from here.
